A Japanese Style Living Room Fit For a Samurai

Project Type

Interior Design

Location

Coconut Grove

This living room was massive. My solution: float all of the furniture in the middle of the room. I had distinct areas within the same space- such as a bench against the wall behind the sofa to sit and read, 2 chairs on either side for tea or the main living area floating in the middle of it all. The tricky thing about the furnishings here was the some were very large. The vintage fireplace was larger than normal and had come from a Hacienda in Central America. Then there were 2 large pieces of art featuring Samurai warriors. Those took center stage in the living room, with the colors of the sofa and rug playing off of these pieces. Creating balance in such a large room so it would still feel cozy enough for 2 to sit and converse posed its own challenges, but by floating the main seating arrangement and having larger pieces on the surrounding walls to ground the space, the perfect balance between large and intimate was achieved.

Stylized furniture icons including sofa, chair, lamp, and decor elements, representing modern interior design concepts in Miami.
