A Japanese Style Living Room Fit For a Samurai

This living room was massive and with a space that large, the biggest mistake you can make is pushing everything against the walls. My solution was to do the opposite entirely: float all of the furniture in the center of the room and let the space breathe around it.

Within that central arrangement, I created distinct zones that each served their own purpose. A bench positioned against the wall behind the sofa offered a quiet spot to sit and read. Two chairs flanked either side for more intimate conversation or a cup of tea. And the main seating area floated proudly in the middle of it all, anchoring everything together.

The furnishings themselves told quite a story. The vintage fireplace, larger than your typical mantelpiece, had been sourced from a Hacienda in Central America and brought with it an incredible sense of history and presence. Two large pieces of art featuring Samurai warriors took center stage, commanding the room with their scale and drama. The sofa and rug were chosen specifically to play off the colors in those pieces, creating a cohesive, intentional conversation between every element in the room.

Achieving balance in a space this large while still keeping it cozy enough for two people to sit and genuinely connect was the real design challenge here. But by floating the main seating and using larger anchor pieces on the surrounding walls, that perfect balance between grand and intimate was achieved beautifully.
