A Dining Room Inspired by Astrology and the Night Sky

Project Type

Interior Design

Location

Coconut Grove

This open-concept dining room presented one of my favorite kinds of design challenges: a space that was extremely large and open, flowing directly into both a stairwell and the main living room. In a layout like that, making the dining area feel grounded and intentional within all that openness becomes the most important job of all.

The home's rectangular footprint guided many of the decisions. A long dining table was the natural choice to honor the proportions of the space, and pendant lights strung across the ceiling above it created a sense of definition and purpose. An oversized sideboard anchored the back wall, with a large mirror above it reflecting light and adding depth without cluttering the sightlines.
To bring warmth into such an expansive area, I leaned on woven textiles layered across the dining chairs and the walls opposite the mirror. The texture added coziness without weighing the space down.

For a truly unique touch, I added a series of astrological decals across the dining room ceiling — a unexpected detail that defined the space beautifully. Super tall table lamps accentuated the vertical wall runners for added visual interest, and painting the sideboard and two main dining chairs gave them just enough distinction from their surroundings. A small detail, but an important one.
This dining room was so much more stunning in person than any photo could capture.

Stylized furniture icons including sofa, chair, lamp, and decor elements, representing modern interior design concepts in Miami.
